LUMI Qing Hua blue-and-white porcelain bracelet 8mm on the wrist — a hand-painted Jingdezhen Christmas gift for mum

Christmas Gifts for Mum: Blue-and-White, Cobalt, and a Story to Tell

Buying for your mother is harder than buying for anyone else. She says she does not need anything. She has a drawer of scarves, a shelf of hand cream, and the "good" necklace you gave her years ago lives in its box. Look at what she actually keeps, though, and a pattern shows: the things that stay are the ones with a story she can tell — where it came from, who made it, why you chose it for her. A bracelet of hand-painted Jingdezhen porcelain gives her exactly that, and it is small enough to wear every day.

What mothers keep

Not the most expensive thing, and not the most fashionable. They keep the object that connects to something: the cup from a trip, the brooch that was her mother's, the gift that came with a reason. A porcelain bracelet works because it is three stories at once — a thousand-year-old craft from one town in China, a glaze colour she already recognises from her own kitchen, and the sentence you write on the card. Our gifts for mum are chosen around those three.

Blue-and-white: the pattern she already knows

Qing Hua — literally "blue flower" — is the blue-and-white porcelain she has seen all her life on bowls, teacups and the vase at her aunt's house. On a LUMI bead the same cobalt is brushed on by hand, then sealed under a clear glaze and fired at 1,300°C, so the brushwork sits inside the glass and cannot wear off. Because each bead is painted separately, no two are identical; hold the bracelet up and you can see the brush change pressure from bead to bead. How it is painted is a short read, and worth passing on with the gift.

For a mother, the 8mm size is the one to choose. It is our most-worn bead — present on the wrist without weight (about 50 grams), and large enough that the brushwork is visible across a table. Qing Hua 8mm →

Cobalt: the same mineral, the quiet version

If your mother wears one colour and no pattern, give her the mineral on its own. Cobalt is what paints blue-and-white; on the Cobalt Blue Solid it is used as the whole glaze, so every bead is a deep, faintly flecked blue with nothing to read and nothing to match. In 6mm it weighs about 35 grams and disappears under a sleeve. The Cobalt Blue Mixed alternates solid cobalt beads with hand-painted ones — a good answer if you cannot decide between colour and pattern.

If she likes red, and likes meaning

The 發 bracelet in red carries one hand-painted character on a single bead: 發, the character for prosperity and good fortune, the one in the greeting every Chinese family says at New Year. Given at Christmas, it does double duty — Lunar New Year 2027 falls on 6 February, and she will still be wearing it. For a mother who has always been the one wishing good fortune on everyone else, it is a way of saying it back.

Two bracelets, one box: one for her, one for you

The Still Water set pairs Qing Hua 8mm with Cobalt Blue Solid 6mm in a single LUMI box — the painted blue and the plain blue, the same mineral two ways. Worn together they stack the way porcelain should (one pattern, one plain, two bead sizes). Split, they become a pair: she keeps the Qing Hua, you keep the cobalt, and you are both wearing the same glaze on different sides of the world. For a mother who lives in another city, that is the whole gift.

The story to tell her

This is what makes the bracelet stay out of the drawer. Write it on the card, or say it when she opens the box:

These beads were made in Jingdezhen, the town that has fired porcelain for a thousand years — the blue-and-white in museums comes from the same place. Each bead was shaped, painted by hand with cobalt, and fired at 1,300°C, so the pattern is sealed inside the glaze and will never rub off. No two beads are the same. I chose it because it is small and it will last.

Every word of that is true, which is why it works. If she wants more, from clay to bead follows a single bead through the kiln.

Sending it straight to her

Each bracelet arrives in the embossed LUMI box with a care card, so there is nothing to wrap. If she lives elsewhere, enter her address at checkout and put your message in the order note; we tuck it inside the box. For Christmas delivery, order by 17 December for Hong Kong, 4 December for Singapore, 12 December for Taiwan, and 3 December for Australia, the UK and the US. The Christmas gifts collection has the full list and every piece that is gift-ready.

Three questions people ask

Will it fit her? Yes, almost certainly. The elastic cord fits a 14–18cm wrist, which covers nearly every adult woman, and there is no clasp to manage. If her wrist is unusually small or large, the size guide takes a minute, or write to us before you order.

Is porcelain too fragile for every day? Glaze is glass fused to the bead at 1,300°C — it does not scratch, tarnish or fade, and it is harder than it looks. It is not indestructible: a hard knock on a tile floor can chip a bead. Off for gardening and the gym, on for everything else.

Does she need to do anything to look after it? Very little. Water and perfume affect the cord, not the beads, so off at the sink and on again after. The care guide is the card in the box, in long form.
