Ceramic Bracelet Gift Guide: How to Choose the Right Glaze for Her
A good gift answers a question the receiver didn't know they had. With a handmade ceramic bracelet, that question is almost always the same: which one is her?
LUMI makes five glazes, and each one wears differently — not just in colour, but in mood. This guide walks through them the way we'd talk you through it in person: by the person you're giving to, not by what's trending.
First, a word on why ceramic
Every LUMI bead is shaped, glazed and kiln-fired by hand in Jingdezhen — the town that has made porcelain for over a thousand years, and where the blue-and-white tradition alone goes back more than 700. Each bead is fired at over 1,300°C. At that temperature the glaze moves: it pools, fractures and settles, so no two beads come out the same. That's not a flaw we tolerate; it's the reason the piece exists. A ceramic bracelet isn't a mass-produced accessory — it's a small object with a fingerprint.
It also arrives ready. Each bracelet comes in the LUMI embossed gift box with a care card — no wrapping, no last-minute scramble.
For the one who notices details: Ice Crackle
The Crackle series is our most-asked-about glaze. During firing, the surface fractures into a web of fine hairlines — a technique the Song dynasty's Ge kiln turned into an art form roughly 800 years ago. Hold one up to the light and the pattern shifts as you turn it. Every bead on the strand carries a different map of lines.
Give this to someone who looks closely at things: the friend who reads the back of the wine label, the sister who notices when you've moved a picture frame. Six colours — blue, sky blue, green, yellow, pink, purple — in 10mm beads (about 19 per bracelet, around 65g), so you can match her palette exactly.
For the one drawn to heritage: Qing Hua (Blue & White)
Blue-and-white porcelain is the most recognised ceramic tradition in the world, and the Qing Hua series puts it on the wrist. Each bead is painted by hand in cobalt on white porcelain clay, then fired once — the brushwork is visibly human, and no two beads share the same stroke.
This is the gift for someone with a sense of history: a mother, a mentor, a friend who collects things with a story. It comes in three bead sizes — 6mm (about 30 beads, ~35g — light and delicate), 8mm (about 23 beads, ~50g — our most popular, everyday weight), and 10mm (about 19 beads, ~65g — statement). If you're unsure how she likes to wear things, our size guide helps.
For the one who wears one colour and means it: Cobalt Blue
Cobalt is the mineral that gives blue-and-white its blue. The Cobalt Blue series uses it as a whole glaze instead of a line: a deep, even, faintly flecked blue that reads close to lapis in daylight.
It's the boldest single colour we make. Give it to the person who wears navy like a signature — the one who would rather have one definite thing than five undecided ones. The Solid is pure cobalt in 6mm beads; the Mixed alternates cobalt with hand-painted Qing Hua beads.
For the one with presence: Forest Green
The Forest bracelet uses our largest beads — 10mm — in a deep, matte green that draws from old woodland ceramics. It sits with weight on the wrist (about 65g) without being heavy.
This one suits someone grounded and certain of themselves. It reads well on a man's wrist too, if you're shopping for a partner or a brother who doesn't usually wear jewellery.
For the one you're wishing well: the 發 Character
The FA Character series is built around a single hand-glazed porcelain bead carrying the character 發 (fā) — to flourish, to grow, to prosper. It's a blessing you can wear, in 8mm beads (around 60g).
Give it at the start of something: a new job, a new home, a new year, a graduation. In red, blue or pink, each paired with matching ceramic beads. Of all our pieces this is the one people most often buy for themselves, too.
When you can't decide: give two
Our gift sets pair two bracelets that belong together — Ink on Ice puts Qing Hua beside blue crackle; First Light pairs pink and sky-blue crackle; Warm Wish matches the 發 bead with purple crackle. Two colour stories, one box.
A note on sizing and care
Every LUMI bracelet is strung on elastic cord and fits wrists from 14 to 18 cm, which covers most adults. If you know she has a very slim wrist, choose 6mm; if she likes a bolder look, 10mm. When in doubt, 8mm is the size we'd pick.
Ceramic is fired, so it won't tarnish or fade the way plated metal does. Keep it away from prolonged water, perfume and lotion, wipe with a soft dry cloth, and it will look the same in ten years as it does today.
