From Clay to Bead

English

People often ask how a ceramic bracelet is actually made, and why it isn't priced like ordinary costume jewellery. Here is the real process, step by step — from a lump of clay to a single bead you can wear.

The material: kaolin clay

Our beads are made from Jingdezhen kaolin — a white clay that is plastic, low in impurities, and fires to a dense, fine body that doesn't easily absorb colour. Each batch is washed and aged first to remove coarse particles and trapped air, so the clay stays stable and won't crack on the wheel.

Shaping: one bead at a time

Each bead is shaped by hand, not poured from a mould. The maker takes a small piece of clay, rolls it round, trims it, and pierces the centre hole by hand. Because size and hole position are judged by feel, every bead in a batch comes out slightly different. The raw beads then dry slowly in the shade for three to five days — dry them too fast and they split.

Two firings: bisque and glaze

The dried beads are bisque-fired first at around 800°C to set the body and make it easier to glaze. After glazing they go back in for the glaze firing, pushed to roughly 1300°C, where the glaze melts into a glassy surface and the colour finally appears. A single firing usually takes more than a full day from heat-up to cool-down, and the kiln can't be opened partway.

Where the crackle comes from

The crackle glaze isn't painted on. As the piece cools, the glaze and the clay body shrink at slightly different rates, and the glaze naturally crazes into a web of fine lines. No pattern can be planned in advance, so no two beads are ever quite the same — which is also why we can't make every bead look identical.

Choosing and caring for it

Ceramic contains no metal, so it tends to be kinder to people with metal allergies. In daily wear, avoid knocking it hard against solid surfaces, and take it off for showers and exercise. If it picks up sweat or lotion, wipe it with a slightly damp soft cloth and return it to its box — no soaking or detergent needed. Most of our bracelets are adjustable, so they fit narrower and wider wrists alike.
