LUMI forest green 10mm porcelain bracelet on the wrist — a handmade Jingdezhen ceramic bracelet for men

Ceramic Bracelets for Men: Forest Green, Cobalt and the 10mm Rule

Most jewellery for men is either a watch or an apology. A leather cord with a steel bead, a chain that wants to be noticed, a stone bracelet with a brand name on a tag. If you are buying a Christmas gift for a man who owns a watch and not much else, there is a quieter option: porcelain beads, fired by hand in Jingdezhen, on a plain elastic cord. No metal, no clasp, nothing that catches the light. It reads less like jewellery and more like a good object — the category he already understands.

The 10mm rule

LUMI beads come in three sizes: 6mm, 8mm and 10mm. For almost every man, choose 10mm. The reason is proportion. A man's wrist is wider and the bones more pronounced, and a strand of small beads sits on it like a thread — it looks borrowed. The 10mm bead is the size of a chickpea; eighteen or so of them make a strand with weight (about 65 grams, roughly a steel watch) and a presence that matches the arm it is on. It looks deliberate. The full comparison of 6mm, 8mm and 10mm explains the counts and weights; for a man, the short version is: go large.

There is one exception, and it is at the end of this article.

Three glazes that work on a man

Colour matters more than pattern here. The glazes below are dark, matte-leaning or mineral, and none of them is pretty in the way that puts men off.

Forest Green, 10mm — the first choice

A deep green that reads almost black indoors and shows its colour in daylight. The glaze takes more iron and more heat than anything else in the range, and more failed firings; the good beads have a depth that a dyed stone never has. Against denim, a grey jumper or a dark coat it is the only thing on the arm that is not a watch, and it holds its own. How the glaze is fired → · Forest Green 10mm →

Crackle Blue, 10mm — for the man who likes things with a story

Ice-crackle glaze is a controlled accident: the glaze shrinks faster than the bead as it cools, and a web of hairline fractures forms, sealed under the surface. No two beads are the same and the pattern cannot be copied. In deep blue it looks like old stoneware, which is exactly what it is. Good for an engineer, a cook, anyone who asks how things are made. Why the cracks are the point → · Crackle Blue 10mm → (the green crackle is the alternative if he already owns something blue.)

Qing Hua, 10mm — for the man who knows what it is

Blue-and-white porcelain is the one pattern most men can name, because they grew up eating off it. On a 10mm bead the cobalt brushwork is big enough to read as brushwork — a hand did this — and the white ground keeps it clean rather than decorative. This is the piece for a man who collects, cooks, travels, or has a grandmother's bowl in a cupboard. Qing Hua 10mm →

What to skip

The pink and yellow crackles, the pale sky blue, and the 發 character bead are all good pieces and all for someone else. For a man's first ceramic bracelet, stay with the three above. Anything that looks like a gift from a holiday stall will go in a drawer.

Will it fit him?

The elastic cord fits a 14–18cm wrist, and 10mm beads give the strand a little more reach than the smaller sizes. Many men sit at 17–18cm and are fine. If you know his wrist is larger than 18cm — a big man, a rower, a climber — write to us before you order and we will tell you honestly whether it will sit well. The size guide shows how to measure in under a minute, and you can do it while he is asleep.

Will he actually wear it?

The honest answer is: more often than a chain. There is no clasp, so it goes on in a second and comes off at the sink. There is no metal, so it does not clink against the watch or react with skin. Glaze is glass, fused to the bead at 1,300°C — it does not scratch a laptop or a steering wheel, and it does not tarnish. The only thing that needs care is the cord: off for showers and swimming, and it lasts. The care guide is two paragraphs long.

If he wears a watch, the bracelet goes on the other wrist. If he already wears one bracelet, a single 10mm strand beside it is enough — two is the limit, and porcelain next to leather or steel looks better than porcelain next to porcelain on a man.

The exception

Some men wear nothing at all, not even a watch, and would not wear a 10mm strand of anything. For him, the one piece that works is the Cobalt Blue Solid in 6mm: one dark colour, about 35 grams, invisible under a cuff. It is the bracelet for a man who does not wear bracelets. If he takes to it, the 10mm is the second gift.

How to give it

Every bracelet arrives in the embossed LUMI box with a care card — nothing to wrap, and the box is plain enough to hand to a man. If you are sending it straight to him, enter his address at checkout and put your message in the order note; we tuck it inside. One line that does the work: Porcelain, fired by hand in Jingdezhen. No metal, no clasp. Wear it for a week.

For Christmas delivery, order by 17 December for Hong Kong, 4 December for Singapore, 12 December for Taiwan, and 3 December for Australia, the UK and the US. The full list is in the Christmas gifts collection.
