One Character, Painted by Hand: The 發 Bead Explained

LUMI FA character ceramic bracelet
The centre bead carries the character 發 (fā) — flourishing — in cobalt blue on white porcelain.

Most beads carry a colour or a pattern. This one carries a word. The centrepiece of the FA Character bracelet is a single Jingdezhen porcelain bead bearing the character (fā) — flourishing, abundance, the momentum of something growing. Worn as a quiet daily intention, or given as a thoughtful gift.

The meaning of 發

發 is one of the most auspicious characters in Chinese culture. It speaks to growth and prosperity — not loud success, but the steady momentum of something coming into its own. Putting it on a bead turns an abstract wish into something you can actually wear.

Painted, not printed

The character is not stamped or printed on. On the blue edition it is brushed by hand in cobalt directly onto the raw porcelain, then sealed under a clear glaze and fired once at high temperature — the same underglaze technique behind classic blue-and-white. Once the glaze turns to glass in the kiln, the character is locked permanently beneath it, so it will not rub off or wear away with daily use.

The data: Underglaze cobalt painting — the method used here — was perfected in Jingdezhen during the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) and is fired at roughly 1,300°C. The pigment sits under the glaze, which is why genuine underglaze decoration does not fade. Read more in our Qing Hua craft story.

Three colourways

The blue 發 is painted in cobalt; the red and pink editions carry the same character in their own warm tones. Same intention, your choice of colour.

A character worth giving

Putting an auspicious character on an object has a long history in Chinese craft — on porcelain, on textiles, on gifts marking a new year, a new home or a new venture. 發 carries especially well because its meaning is forward-looking: it wishes growth on whoever wears it. That makes the bracelet an easy gift to give with intention, and an easy one to receive.

It is also harder to make than it looks. Brushing a clean, legible character onto a small curved bead, in cobalt that will shift slightly in the firing, leaves no room to correct a stroke once it is laid down. Every 發 bead is a small act of steady hand-work before it ever reaches the glaze.

White body, clear word

The legibility of 發 depends on what sits behind it. Jingdezhen porcelain is high in alumina, which fires to an unusually pure white — the bright ground that lets a small character read clearly at arm’s length. The cleaner the white, the sharper the word. And because the character is sealed beneath the glaze, ordinary wear, water and time leave it intact: a daily reminder that stays readable.
