The Cracks Are the Point: Inside the Crackle Glaze

Look closely at a Crackle bead and you will see a fine web of lines running across the glaze. It is easy to read them as damage. They are the opposite — they are the entire point of the piece, and getting them right is one of the older problems in Chinese ceramics.

A "flaw" the Song dynasty turned into art

Crackle in a glaze is technically called crazing, and for centuries it was treated as a kiln defect. Potters of the Song dynasty (960–1279) were the first to reverse that judgement, deliberately formulating glazes to craze in a controlled, decorative network. The celebrated Ge and Guan kilns built their reputation on it: Ge ware is known for a distinctive double crackle, where the major cracks were stained dark with ink or tea and the finer secondary cracks read gold-brown, creating a two-tone web prized for centuries.

The data: Controlled crackle was elevated from accidental defect to deliberate art in the Song dynasty (960–1279). Crackle glazes are characterised by very high levels of sodium and potassium oxides — the two oxides with the highest thermal expansion of any commonly used in ceramics.

The science: a glaze that shrinks faster than the clay

The effect comes from a deliberate mismatch in how fast the glaze and the clay body shrink as the kiln cools. The glassy glaze contracts more than the body beneath it. Because the two are fused together, that difference builds tensile stress, and the stress relieves itself by fracturing the glaze into a network of fine cracks. Potters tune the result by adjusting the glaze recipe, the thickness of the glaze relative to the body, the firing temperature, and the kiln atmosphere. Change any one of these and the pattern shifts — which is why no two crackle surfaces are identical.

Our Crackle beads are made in Jingdezhen, the city that has been the centre of Chinese porcelain for over a thousand years, and fired at the high temperatures porcelain demands — around 1,300°C. We are not selling antique Ge ware; we are working in the same tradition, letting the same controlled tension write a one-of-a-kind pattern onto each bead. The fine lines you wear were formed in the cooling kiln and will never repeat.

The Crackle series carries the same crackle craft across six glaze colours, so the pattern stays personal while the palette stays yours to choose.

Two kilns, two kinds of crack

Not all crackle looks the same, and the Song masters knew it. Guan ware tended toward large, bold cracks that broke the surface into broad panes. Ge ware was prized for the opposite — a fine double network, where a web of small cracks sits inside a web of larger ones. To make the pattern visible, the big cracks were rubbed with ink or tea so they read dark, while the finer lines oxidised to a softer gold-brown on their own. The result was never painted; it was coaxed out of the glaze and then revealed.

A crackle surface is also a record. Each network formed in a single cooling and belongs to one bead alone, and as the piece is handled over time the lines settle and define further. You are not wearing a printed pattern — you are wearing the trace of one firing that will never be repeated.
